Homeschooling: Day 1 (didn't we already do this?)

Today we started our first "full load" day of homeschooling. Not "just the basics" like we did in June, not "too lazy to get anything ready, so let's just skip it" like we did in July. We did *everything* that we'll be doing for the school year. This was, in essence, Raia's first day of first grade. It was not too bad, I guess. A little anti-climatic, really.

We started at 8:30, and were done by 1:30, although we could have been done sooner except I gave Raia an hour break after Patrick went down for his nap so that I could exercise, since I missed my workout time this morning (would have been running on only 4 hours of sleep if I'd gotten up at my normal time this morning! Nu-uh). Hopefully tomorrow we can by done by lunch time. :)

Here's what we did today:

Scripture Study:
This week I'm having Raia memorize the scripture from this month's Friend magazine (Seek and ye shall find...)

Language Arts:
First Language Lessons 1:  Today's lesson was on nouns. We also read a children's book about a kid who goes to an alien planet where they aliens don't use pronouns, and he teaches when and how to use them.
Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Your Child to Read:  Today's lesson was on the letter blend "nk". Included a short poem at the end for her to read, that had "nk" words in it.
Writing With Ease 1: Today's lesson was writing practice from Little House in the Big Woods, emphasizing complete sentences. She copied "There were no roads." pointing out the capital letter at the beginning of the sentence, and the period at the end.
All About Spelling 1: Today's lesson was practicing segmenting words like "D-og" "C-at" "M-a-n" pulling down two or three coins as she said each sound in the word given. She also identified the first and last sounds in the words given.

Math:
Math U See: This week's lesson is practicing place values: hundreds, tens, and units, "building" the numbers with the blocks that come with the curriculum.

Science:
Elemental Science: Biology: Today's lesson was on animal habitats and migration. Read a page on each of those subjects from the Kingfisher Encyclopedia of Animals.

History:
Story of the World 1: Ancients: Read first half of the Introduction chapter, about "What is history?" Tomorrow we'll start a project where she'll write down (or I'll write down for her) a bit about herself, plus ask questions of some of her relatives about aspects of their histories (birth dates, marriage dates, favorite game as a kid, etc.)

And that was it! It looks like a lot, all written out like that, but only the writing and the math parts took more than 10 minutes, and that was because Raia kept goofing off on how she wrote her letters, and wanted to build "sandwiches" and "families" with the math blocks, instead of using them to build numbers. We may switch to the Math Mammoth program I also have if that becomes too much of a problem.

On to tomorrow...
