Saturday afternoon Raia and I spent 4 hours in a movie theater. We saw the Toy Story 1 & 2 3D double-feature. We had gummy peach rings and gummy bears and soda and popcorn. Lots of sugar and salt and fat. And a lot of fun.
It was a bit surreal watching a movie in a theater that I remember seeing as a teenager one Thanksgiving afternoon with my cousins. (that was how the adults got the kids out of the house while they made dinner. we were given a wad of cash and dropped off at the nearest theater to watch whatever movie Disney put out that year) Almost 15 years later and here I was watching it again, only this time as a married mother of 3, with my oldest at my side. It's a true testament to the awesomeness of Pixar. I really think Toy Story is going to go the way of Snow White and Cinderella. 50 years from now you'll be the wierdo on the playground if you've never seen it.
One thing that was a bit different about this viewing though (besides the obvious 3D part) was the almost lack of laughter at the funny parts. There were a few quiet chuckles, and Raia laughed pretty loudly at parts, but it wasn't a theater full of laughter like I remember from the first time. But of course, there was good reason for that.
All the adults in the theaters were parents. Over half of the audience was under the age of 10.
In other words: this was nobody's first time seeing the movie. We'd all seen these two movies dozens... and dozens... and dozens of times.
There were also quiet a few toddlers there. My guess is the parents were using this well-known movie as a "theater training" experience for their kids. Buzz and Woody have a way of mezmerizing little kids.
I should know. My kids are watching them right now so I can type this post. ;)
